Physiology – Adopt a physiology of confidence
Whenever you present, be confident. I know it sounds obvious, but sometimes your posture makes you seem less confident. Find your physiology of confidence and stand in a certain way that exudes self-assuredness – then start to become habituated with what that looks and feels like, so it becomes second nature. We recommend watching the Amy Cuddy TED Talk.
Auditory – Use a low and slow voice
Watch any news broadcast and you’ll see why we are giving you this tip. Low and slow is the most effective voice for influencing others. Speaking in this way, and using micro pauses, gives your voice impact without being rushed. It’s a very powerful practice.
Visual aids – Create or build
When using visual aids, either create or build. When making a flip chart presentation, you are literally creating. And when using PowerPoint, build the slide. That means don’t show the whole slide at once. People will read ahead and then switch off. Rather, unveil your ideas click by click. Keep people guessing….it adds intrigue.
Energy – Use relaxed aliveness
Your energy affects the entire room. ‘Relaxed aliveness’ is a lovely energy to have in front of a group of people. It’s not contrived or overly formal. Instead, you become really present without self-consciousness.
Relationship – Make meaningful eye contact
Your relationship with your audience is about one thing: eye contact. Really look at your audience, into their eyes, and make a meaningful connection. Don’t hold the gaze so long that it becomes weird….and don’t just scan the room; see them, connect, and influence.
Story – Always use a story
Should you use stories? Yes! In every presentation, use at least one example, scenario or illustration to engage your audience, boost your ideas and relate them to real experiences. The more relevant the stories you share, the better!
